Rise of Australian Indie Bookish Stores

There's been a modern counter-culture movement brewing in the publishing industry since the rise of accessible self-publishing modules. It goes without saying Amazon has recently dealt many death blows to independent players in the industry and continues to engage in cartel behaviors to ensure their continued dominance.
But.
Their launch of easy-access distribution pathways in 2007—that grew to encompass both digital and the physical with their print-on-demand and drop-shipping services—did open doors. Amazon essentially handed independent authors and small press the keys to compete against trade publishers. An opportunity industry leaders would have scoffed at and called ludicrous only years prior.
In fact, many trade publishers did significantly underestimate the disruptive impact of Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)—and later, IngramSpark and Draft2Digital—well into the 2010s.
Now, the world is very different.
Popular self published authors report monthly sales in the six figures. There's a whole new industry of small award indie presses (that aren't yet swallowed by the trade powerhouses anyway. . .). Authors are clawing back some of the power.
However, the industry is not immune to the waves of global unrest.
Today, gone is the optimism of the 2010s. Grim reality knocks instead. More than ever, we need to tell our stories, but the capitalistic enshittification of the tools that once enabled independent publishing, are now equally exploitive, even traps in themselves.
To survive, the independent book industry needs to grow beyond the digital existence and spread its roots where it matters most: in community. That thing we're all so desperately craving at the moment. (There's a reason why the majority of the bookstores listed below opened only last year, just saying).
But enough of my rambling.
It's time to celebrate those that champion the local talent of Australia and find, perhaps, your new favourite third-space. Please go and support book lovers and local authors by visiting these Indie Bookish Stores.

MALENY BOOKSHOP
SHOP 2 41 MAPLE ST MALENY QLD 4552
Opening Hours
Monday - Friday 9AM to 4PM
Saturday 9AM to 3PM
Sunday 10AM to 3PM

They call themselves the best bookshop within the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. And while I can't say squat about that, it's true they are more definitely the oldest.
Unlike the many, many, newcomers on this list, this brick and mortar store has existed for over three decades. Nearly thirty-five in fact and still going strong. That's thanks in large to its saviors Ian and Harper Bailey who purchased the bookstore after the pandemic.
The Maleny Bookshop is predominately a second-hand non-fiction book seller, but has a variety of exceptions. One being their role as Australian distributor of Lewis Masonic. The oldest Masonic publishing house in the world. Masonic being Freemasonry. Titles being ritual texts. (The more you know). The other being their love of local South East Queensland Indie Fiction Authors. The Manly Bookshop champion and stock a collection of local independent authors found here.

Fiction of Reality is primarily an indie trade-stocking bookstore that also invests in a wide range of independent Aussie authors on their shelves. Unlike many of the romance and fantasy focussed bookstores noted here, they champion a diverse range of genres.
In fact, their latest stocked is a historical fiction by Brisbane-Based Author, Aaron Dryden, delving into a true-life-inspired story of Queenslanders surviving both World Wars, adeptly called Between Two Wars. (Yes, I have a question about the art of the cover, but for now. . .good for them).
Their upcoming events include an author signing for K.S Elliott's latest release, February 21st, and their monthly Book Club meet up.

Collaborating with Uncommon Giftshop at Castle Towers—under Berkanan & Company signage—the best friends have brought their online store, Unwritten Blends, to the "brick and mortar". They shelve a small curation of independent Australian authors amongst trade titles.

Dedicated to all book lovers, The Indie Realm was created by Author Shannon Riley out of a dream to see her books in stores. Now, The Indie Realm supports both sides of the coin with nooks for readers and spaces for writers; not to mention the many shelves for indie books!
In the past days, they have begun revealing their new book subscription that quarterly celebrates two Aussie indie authors. (One of their suspected first is Author Bindi Kennedy). They are also up to their third Heated Rivalry watch party. (Pretty fab).

Reader Owned | Romance
Opening Hours
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 9AM to 3PM
Thursday 10AM to 4PM

To Be Read is the indie bookshop of Lauren—or, as she's better known online, RedReadsBooks. This venture came about after she was stuck at home and found her passion for reading reignited. (I'm wondering if it's a pandemic thing).
After failing to find connections to similar book lovers in her area, she created the social media group Perth Bookish Baddies that soon found itself over 6,000 members strong. (And with its own merch line). (Pretty badass I will say).

I’ve bought online from Wild Hearts Bookshop a few times. They’ve been around for years and stock indie authors.
